A Living Landscape

For the Yorta Yorta, Country is not just a place; it is an ancestor, a teacher, and a provider. Our traditional lands encompass the rich riverine plains where the Dhungala (Murray) and Kaiela (Goulburn), Yakoa (Campaspe) rivers flow.

This land has sustained our people for thousands of years, providing a complex ecosystem of wetlands, forests, and plains that hold our stories and our law.

Yorta Yorta
Language

Our language is the heartbeat of our identity. Though silenced for generations, we are breathing life back into our words through song, storytelling, and education.

Archival Recording

“We listen to the land, and the land speaks to us in the language of our grandfathers.”

“For us – the land has a spiritual connection; it's our mother”

Visitors to Yorta Yorta Country are encouraged to walk softly and respect the ancestral spirits that inhabit this land. Our protocols ensure that our heritage is protected for all future generations.

Yorta Yorta History

Yorta Yorta people have lived on our Country since timev immemorial. Our oral histories and cultural practices connect us to countless generations of ancestors who have cared for this land.

The Yorta Yorta Native Title claim, though ultimately unsuccessful in the courts, demonstrated our ongoing connection and led to important recognition of our rights.

Today, through YYNAC, we continue to assert our sovereignty, protect our heritage, and build a strong future for Yorta Yorta people. Despite the impacts of colonization, we have maintained our cultural identity, laws, and onnection to Country.
